About Affiliated Events or Activities in the Festival

Here you can apply to be one of the Affiliated Events or Activities which will make up the Festival of History (5-16 July 2027), convened by the Institute of Historical Research and Royal Historical Society.

Affiliated activities are those which do not require a Festival bursary to take place in July 2027. These may be existing activities to badge as part of the Festival or special events designed for the Festival, to be promoted and supported (in non-financial terms) by the festival organisers. Affiliated activities will take place across the United Kingdom.

If you wish to apply for a Festival bursary to enable your event to take place, please apply through the Funded Events or Activities strand.

About the Festival of History

The Festival seeks to showcase the ‘How of History’: the practice of research and historians’ craft in recovering and recreating the past.

Central to this practice is the expertise and knowledge that informs historical research. Located in our universities, in public history networks, and with independent researchers, expert practice underpins the history we enjoy in its many different forms. In creating a programme of activities, the organisers welcome events that show and celebrate how history is made today, and engage with new work by our participants.

Submitting an application for an Affiliated Event or Activity

Applications are welcome from groups or networks of historians who are researching the past and communicating that research to a wide audience.

As part of your application, you’ll be asked to provide an:

  • an application form outlining details of the applying group, the proposed event and venue.
  • an equality and Diversity Monitoring Form.

How your application will be assessed

Applications will be assessed in relation to their engagement with the aims of the Festival which are provided here.

Applications for Affiliated activities will fulfil one or more of the following aims:

  • explore the process of  historical research: the 'how of history'
  • demonstrate the skills and training historians bring to understanding the past
  • convey the civic and other contributions of historians beyond education
  • celebration of historical practice and knowledge
  • appeal to a wide audience and bring together different groups

Key dates in the application process

  • The closing date for applications is Wednesday 6 January 2027
  • You will receive a response by Monday 8 February 2027
  • If you are successful, we will send you further information on next steps

Applicants will be asked to complete two forms:

  1. Application form outlining details of the applying group, the proposed event and venue.
  2. Equality and Diversity Monitoring Form.

Please note that this application form is intended for those groups who are planning to self-finance their events and will not require any external funding. If you believe you will not be able to self-finance your proposed event we encourage you to apply through the funded event form.

By submitting an application, you agree - if you are successful - to send information for publication on our website (e.g. details of your public event) by required deadlines and to submit a short evaluation of your event or activity after its completion.

If you have any questions please reach us at festivalofhistory@sas.ac.uk.
